What is OGDS?

OGDS is a short form for oesophagogastroduodenoscopy. This is a procedure to see the oesophagus(swallowing pipe),gastric organ(Stomach) and duodenum(early part of small intestine.

Apart from seeing the above organs we are also able to take samples(biopsy) ,remove small growths(eg Polyp ) , remove foreign bodies which are accidentally swallowed)eg-(coins/nails)
OGDS is useful in detecting inflammation of the stomach(gastritis), inflammation esophagus(reflux esophagitis),inflammation of the duodenum,growth or cancers, ulcers, narrowing(strictures) and swollen blood vessels(varices)


Who needs an OGDS?

People who has heart burn, non heart related chest pain and chest discomfort, difficulty in swallowing(dysphagia),painful swallowing(odynophagia)unexplained vomiting.upper abdominal pain burning sensation(usually known to layman as gastric pain),bloating,frequent belging( burping).

  • More serious symptoms
  • Passing of black tarry stools(malena)
  • Vomiting of blood
  • Unexplained loss of weight and loss of appetite
  • Unable to swallow
  • Feeling a growth or mass in the upper abdomen


How is an OGDS done?

  • This is a day care procedure(Usually patient can go home 1or 2 hours after the procedure)
  • Patient needs to fast 4 to 6 hours before procedure(no liquid or solid food)
  • Anaesthetic spray will be sprayed to the patient’s throat to numb the throat.the doctor also will give patient concious sedation to calm the patient.
  • The whole procedure takes less than 5 to 10 minutes.
  • This is a low risk procedure where the doctor will explain to the patient the risk involved.
